QA 4.2 Now Available!
(Updated August 18th)

Download Now! or see below for in-depth instructions.

For the full QA experience, you will need to download & install QA’s newest software package. Periodic upgrades are necessary across the entire QA community. These upgrades require the replacement of the QA software. To check out the latest features, click here.

The following are guidelines and instructions for downloading and upgrading your QA software, whether you are brand new to Quest Atlantis or have been Questing since the beginning. Please use the following links to find your way around this page. Thanks!

FOR QUESTERS AND TEACHERS:
DOWNLOADING, INSTALLATION, & UPGRADES

Downloading the QA Software for the First Time

At School
In schools, usually it will be necessary for a technology coordinator or other administrator to download the QA software for the first time. This is due to security structures (e.g. firewalls) which many schools have in place. Please refer technology coordinators to the Special Instructions provided on this page (see below).

If you wish to download and install the QA software on your school computer, you can double-click the following download file and proceed with the installation instructions. Click here to download the new browser. You will need administrator rights to install the software on this machine.

At Home
If you are using QA from home and you are a new user, please download the new 4.1 browser installation file here. If you save the downloaded file to your computer, simply double-click the downloaded file and proceed with the installation instructions.

Upgrading your QA Software with the Newest Version, QA 4.1

At School
In schools, often it will be easier to have a technology coordinator or other administrator upgrade to QA’s newest version.

If you would like to try the upgrade without help, click here. If you have problems, you will need to have the school technology coordinator follow the Special Instructions.

At Home
Download the new browser here. Installing this version will replace your old browser.

FOR TECHNOLOGY COORDINATORS:
SPECIAL DOWNLOAD & INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Most schools have mechanisms to reload a common configuration (ghost) across all school computers regularly, sometimes nightly. The easiest (and best) way to upgrade these machines is to replace the old QA software with the latest version in the ghost. The next time the ghost is applied, all computers will have the latest version installed. While you're adding the new QA browser to the ghost, you should also add these files to the QA installation directory. This folder contains the most commonly used objects and textures utilized in QA. Including this folder in your configuration will significantly increase the speed at which your users access QA. Once downloaded, unzip the file and place it in the following directory, "C:/Program Files/Quest Atlantis/" or the directory in which you installed QA.

Important Note: If a school does use a ghosting mechanism, but the QA browser is upgraded locally (per computer) instead of through the ghost configuration, the upgrade process will need to be applied repeatedly as the ghost will override the upgrade process. Modifying the ghost configuration is the only efficient way to upgrade the QA browser in this situation.

If your school does not use a system like this, then each machine will need to be upgraded manually. Download and install on individual machines by clicking here.

The QA browser allows questers to save their password, but this can be a problem when multiple students use the same computer. If a student saves her password and then leaves the computer, any other user of that computer will be able to log in with her account. To prevent this, you will need to modify the file that controls configuration settings. Find the 'aworld.ini' file in the Quest Atlantis installation directory (C:/Program Files/Quest Atlantis). There are two files named 'aworld' in this directory. Look for the file that has "Configuration Settings" as it's "Type". Right-click on this file and select "Properties". Check the box marked "Read-Only" and then hit "OK". Now configuration changes students apply won't be saved for the next session. Remember, in schools that use a ghosting mechanism, you must apply this change to the ghost image.

FOR QUESTIONS & ASSISTANCE

If you are a technology coordinator or have been unable to find local assistance in a school, please contact Craig Jackson (scjackso@indiana.edu), QA’s Project Manager. Any upgrade can be a stressful process, especially those involving a distributed environment like Quest Atlantis. We appreciate your patience.
